'Mars Calling' short doco

I had a dream….to make a film about people with a dream to go to Mars…

Mars Calling on Vimeo, featuring shortlisted Mars One applicants for a one-way ticket to the Red Planet.

Would you take a one-way ticket to Mars?

And if you did, along with four other citizen astronauts, what sort of 'new' world would you create up there?

These questions that fascinated me, ever since I heard about the Mars One mission to set up a human colony on Mars from 2024. It's the brainchild of Bas Lansdorp, a Dutch entrepreneur who had the dream, but not the money to finance it. He teamed up with a bunch of people via the non-profit Mars One foundation to make it happen, financed by the sale of rights to the boldest scale, global reality TV program the world has ever seen.

I wrote this piece for The Age about it and continued to be fascinated by the mission. Then a chance meeting with film director and editor, JP O'Brien from 5andA Films in my local accountant's office led to us chatting about it, and voila! Sort of

So, here's the short film we made for love, not money, Mars Calling.  Pretty chuffed with how it turned out.

I'm really excited for our stars - Dianne McGrath and Stephen Laurence - and for all the other aspiring Mars One applicants. I think it's a brave and bold undertaking and one of the very few reality shows I'd be interested to watch.
